The conference was taking place under the chairmanship of MSc Nguyen Thi Minh Chau (a Vice Director of the Center for Research and Consultancy for Development of the SISS), with the presence of a guest, Mr Do Van Thuyen (Manager of the Social Insurance Propaganda of Ho Chi Minh City) and 44 participants came from the centers, lecturers and students at the Universities in Ho Chi Minh (HCM) City. Firstly, the beginning section was scheduled for three centers for sharing: the Center for Health Consultation and Community Development (CHD), the Center for Social Work Community Development Research and Consultancy (SDRC) and the Center for Research and Consultancy for Development (CRCD). They presented about their achievements, the time working together, the experience and understanding to contribute jointly to the development of Vietnam community.

MSc Nguyen Hoang Yen (Director of CHD) presented the successful lessons and difficult problems in connecting the social organizations in HCM city from the past projects of the center. Specifically in project “Research on trafficking in boys in Vietnam“ she said that in the initial searching process, everything was only about girls and women that were trafficked, but no cases in boys. Even she and CHD researchers did not think that CHD could interview up to 20 trafficked boys. But within four months of searching efforts, CHD officials had found and successfully interviewed 82 victims -trafficked boys in 12 provinces throughout the country. This success was achieved because of the true connection with individuals and organizations working in or  related to the counter human trafficking and/or child protection in Vietnam. The continued success is the collaboration with CRCD staff and the Transport Association of Ba Ria – Vung Tau province in the field research of “The lifting safety project“ at the Cai Mep International Terminals in Ba Ria – Vung Tau province. As a result, 150 truck/ container drivers who were busy all days at the port and as well as leaders and officials of the transport companies were interviewed in Ba Ria – Vung Tau province.

Following was the representative of SDRC, MA Nguyen Thi Ngoc Bich sharing about the project “Supporting and advising legal issues for migrant workers in HCM city“, connected with the Center for Youth Support  Workers of the HCM City Youth’s Union. A success of the center after the program implementation was contributed to raise awareness of law to the migrant workers in the city and protect their rights.

Finally, the presentation of  CRCD representative, MA Nguyen Thi Minh Chau shared on the topic: “Assessment of the effectiveness of the project model: The whole population health insurance in Khanh Hoa province“. This project was implemented by the CRCD in collaboration with the Department of Labor – Invalids and Social Affairs of province. The success was reached through three models in two communes, namely Ninh Tho and Ninh Phung that was the information transmission of the communication program and the spreading effects from the participants. However, the center still encountered difficulties in the implementation process. It was the restrictions on registration procedures, the quality of care provided at commune health centers and weak awareness of people on health insurance.

After listening to the CRCD’s presentation on the communication model on health insurance, all of the delegates and guests discussed the issue and gave suggestions to improve the communication activities of health insurance to the entire population.

With the aim for raising awareness about prevention of serious diseases, the communications program about “Raising awareness on HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted infections (STIs)“ for officials and workers of the Hanoi pilot light metro line project section Nhon – Hanoi Railway Station. On September 28^th 2016, the number of people knowing about safe sex through the program has grown to 304 people.

The program gave participants the essential information about prevention of HIV/AIDS and STIs, the preventative method and how to use condoms properly. With applying a new multi-dimensional educational method and the lively enthusiastic presentation, POSCO E&C lecturer had brought fun atmosphere for the class. While guiding how to use condom correctly, trainers played some funny clips which carry highly helpful message in order to emphasize the right attitude about using condoms to workers.

Through the program, the officials and workers had a change in the awareness and attitudes towards people with HIV and concurrently increased the ability to execute the HIV and STIs infected preventive measures. However, the level of change in perception of some participants was still not high. Therefore, the workers were encouraged to review the leaflets combined with the presentation handouts after the program to understand the means of transmission and learn how to avoid them for themselves.

These communication activities about “Raising awareness on HIV/AIDS and STIs” by the CHD and POSCO E&C for contruction workers will continue to be organized monthly, aimed to protect health for workers and represent the high sense of responsibility towards the society.

The latest event about “Raising awareness on HIV/AIDS and STIs” with the guidance of a lecturer – Assistant Doctor Nguyen Thi Ha was successfully held in a pleasant atmostphere on August 23^rd, 2016.  Until now, there have been 282 officials and workers of the Hanoi pilot light metro line project section Nhon – Hanoi Railway Station participated in this program.

The officials and workers attending the event were provided with useful information about HIV/AIDS and STIs, along with information about the clinics, tests and free condoms.

These communication activities about “Raising awareness on HIV/AIDS and STIs” will continue to be organized monthly for new workers who recently join in the Hanoi pilot light metro line project section Nhon – Hanoi Railway Station aimed enhancing awareness and reducing the risks of infection to the community nearby.

By the end of training, all of the investigators were competent and ready to collect information at three study communes, namely Xuan Lanh, Xuan Quang 1, Phu Mo, Dong Xuan district, Phu Yen province during September 2016.

Local partner: Traffic Safety Committee of Ba Ria – Vung Tau province (TSC).

Objective:

The field research aims to obtain data on needs assessment to limit the risks on the road in and in the surroundings of Cai Mep International Terminal (CMIT) and collect data to serve as a baseline in order to evaluate the project impact.

To achieve the objectives, there are two main activities:

• Needs assessment:

-  Identify the risk of unsafe traffic road in project location (included habits driving, traffic signal systems …)

- Identify the programs/policies related to traffic safety and CMIT with close attention to avoid any program duplication.

-  Provide specific recommendations for planning intervention to better ensure project’s achievements.

• Baseline survey:

-  Assess existing levels of CMIT – affiliated drivers knowledge, attitude and practices on safe driving skills.

-  Propose indicators, monitoring plan and evaluation of the project.
