Community participation in malaria elimination

On November 22, 2017 – a representative of the Center for Health Consultation and Community Development (CHD) participated in a consensual workshop on the project “Enhancing the participation of community in Malaria Elimination” in Vietnam. This workshop was held by the Vietnam Consortium for Malaria Community Initiatives (VietMCI) at Hai Au hotel in Qui Nhon City.

In 2011, the Prime Minister approved the “National Strategy for Malaria Control and Elimination period 2011-2020 and vision to 2030 in Viet Nam”. At present, malaria has decreased in many locations but still persists, especially among a hard-to-reach (HTR) and mobile and migrant population (MMP). The presence of artemisinin resistance cases in the Greater Mekong Sub-region, including Vietnam, has made the situation even more complicated and concerned. For these reasons, the VietMCI has developed the project “Enhancing community participation in malaria elimination in Vietnam” and has received a notice of funding from the Global Fund. The main content of this workshop was collect comments and reach agreement with key partners and local governments on the operation and coordination in the four project highly malaria endemic provinces, such as: Binh Phuoc, Dak Lak, Dak Nong and Gia Lai.

There were 40 participants attending in the workshop, including four members of the VietMCI (CHD, Center for Supporting Community Development Initiatives – SCDI, Vietnam Public Health Association – VPHA and Phap Bao Center for Community Counseling and Support – PBSC); the representatives from the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Planning and Investment; the United Nations Office for Project Service (UNOPS); the National Institute of Malariology – Parasitology and Entomology; Provincial governments; the Departments of Health; the Binh Dinh Union of Science and Technology Associations, the Centers for Disease Control/Centers for Preventive Medicine/Malaria Control Centers of Binh Phuoc, Dak Lak, Dak Nong and Gia Lai; international organizations working in malaria areas, such as Population Services International (PSI) and Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI). Particularly, malaria patients and people living in the malaria areas also attended the workshop.

Following are some photos from the workshop.
